CHAPTER 11
Afraid to touch anything that would piss him off, Jess slept on the sofa. Curtains remained open. She pulled the blanket that sheâd had in the cage from the floor and dragged it over her. The caravan was warmer than the cage, but she would have rather been in there, to be honest. She slept badly. Nightmares about Blake. And Callum. Sheâd lost the sense of smell because of the dried blood in her nose, and she made no real attempt to clear it. It was better when she couldnât smell.
At first light, she got up. Started by collecting the clothing from the floor of the caravan and piling it in the living space. She poked around for something to make him for breakfast. Found half a loaf of bread that wasnât mouldy in the bread bin. Pre-sliced. Left it on the side. Along with a pack of butter from the fridge. Had fucking crumbs all jammed into it. Like heâd made toast and buttered it before. She would do that for him. Cleared and cleaned the table around the TV. She turned the TV on with the volume low. She found it picked up radio too. She tuned it to one of the standard BBC channels. Let it play quietly. Tried to make it homely for the monster.
Her husband.
When she heard him stirring she started on the toast. Still naked. Bruises on her ribs when she woke. She looked at her face. Her right eye was swollen. Blackened, but not swollen shut. Blood red in the corner. Had a lump in her mouth where sheâd bitten herself.
He came out the bedroom. Went straight into the bathroom. Closed the door. At least that was something. He glanced around the caravan before he did, but didnât look at her. Not once. She took the toast from the grill. The dirty grill. Buttered it, just as he came from the toilet. Smell of shit penetrating her slowly clearing nose. Didnât wash his hands. Went and sat at the table. Didnât speak.
Jess poured the rapist his coffee and took the toast to him. She sat opposite him without anything herself. She knew he wouldnât let her eat it anyway, so she sat there. Stomach tight from hunger. She could feel something wrong with her skin. Probably malnutrition setting in. She should be able to have something when he went out.
If.
âDid you sleep well?â she asked.
He looked up from the food. Heâd just been staring at it, like he wasnât expecting it. âAye.â He sipped the coffee. A small smile.
If he was happy, he hopefully wouldnât beat her.
Took a bite of the toast. Then another. He never thanked her. She wouldnât expect him to. But he was eating it and that was something.
She smiled politely at him, never taking her attention from him, and not attempting to leave the table. âIâll clean today,â she said, like it was her idea. That seemed to please him. âDo you have a busy one?â
He nodded. âHave to fix the shy.
